Prefab Carport
Wooden carports have a very broad base of appeal. Professional carport builders lobe using wood because of the creativity in style and
finishes that it allows. An amateur builder will be highly satisfied using timber as well as being a simple medium with which to work.
Timber carports beat metal carports for looks hands down. Fancy posts and detailed fret work will give your carport project real style.
The nicer timbers also have interesting grain effects that can accentuate your design effects. Wood carports need to be protected from the
weather by a good lick of paint, but this is an opportunity to make sure it uses the same color scheme as your house.
Your local lumberyard will have a wide choice of timbers, but the easiest to use are softwoods. They are great to work with, light and easy to
use and easily protected with paint.
The only negative is that compared to metal you need to use big profiles to cover small spans. It is not unusual to see 12 inch by 2 inch
beams across a double carport span, and whilst this can be quite a design feature it must be carefully contemplated so that it does not look out
of place.
You can find free carport designs in many places, but for a touch of class you should engage engage an architect to create your carport
design. Wood carports are my personal favorites because of the character they bring to a house.
